The CIPD Level 3 is likely the first major milestone. However, Is CIPD Level 3 a Diploma? The answer is a bit of a "yes and no" depending on when you’re asking.
Whether you’re looking to break into HR or you’ve recently found yourself handling "people person" duties by accident, the CIPD Level 3 is likely the first major milestone on your radar. However, the world of professional qualifications is notorious for its jargon. One of the most common points of confusion for newcomers is a simple naming question: "Is CIPD Level 3 actually a Diploma?"
The answer is a bit of a "yes and no" depending on when you’re asking, but for anyone starting today, there is a specific title you need to know.
If you are browsing older HR forums or looking at the CVs of senior managers, you will frequently see the "Level 3 Diploma" mentioned. Historically, the CIPD offered Awards, Certificates, and Diplomas at the Foundation level. However, following a major syllabus overhaul in 2021, the CIPD streamlined its offering.
Today, the standard qualification at this level is officially known as the Foundation Certificate in People Practice. While the "Diploma" title has been phased out at Level 3, the current Certificate is a comprehensive, robust program that has effectively replaced it. It is designed to be the definitive entry point for the profession, covering everything from recruitment and reward to the essentials of employment law.
When assessing the "weight" of this qualification, the most important factor isn't the word "Diploma" or "Certificate"—it’s the Level. In the UK’s Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), Level 3 is academically equivalent to an A-Level or an International Baccalaureate.
This means that while it is a foundation course, it requires a professional standard of writing and analysis. It typically takes between six to nine months to complete, depending on whether you study full-time or alongside your job. It covers four distinct units of study—including core behaviours, data analytics, culture, and essentials of people practice and it carries the same industry "heft" that the old Diploma used to hold because the Diploma was still a level 3 qualification – just a bit broader in terms of the content covered.
The confusion persists largely because the word "Diploma" is still used for higher tiers of CIPD study. As you progress in your career, the qualifications grow in size and complexity:
In the current framework, the CIPD reserves the "Diploma" title for these intermediate and advanced stages. At the entry-level (Level 3), the "Certificate" is the highest and only designation available.
To put it simply: No, the CIPD Level 3 is no longer a Diploma; it is a Certificate. However, in the eyes of a recruiter or an HR Director, this change is purely administrative. Completing the Foundation Certificate in People Practice tells an employer that you have mastered the essential building blocks of HR. It remains the gold standard for anyone starting their journey toward becoming a Chartered Member of the CIPD.
